Ever wonder what additional living expense even means on your home policy? It's pretty simple stuff; it is any cost for living you would incur in addition to your monthly expenses. If your home burns down your mortgage doesn't stop, taxes on the property don't stop, maintenance costs don't stop so your insurance helps you pay for a place to live and the additional cost you incur while living outside of your home during repairs. It does not pay your existing costs, you still pay those, but the additional costs that the loss has caused you to have. If you suffer ANY loss that places you outside of the home because it is deemed unlivable would qualify you for this coverage in your homeowner's policy. If you suffer a loss that places you outside of your home be sure to ask your adjuster if this applies and how to start using that coverage right away.
